What Is The Motability Scheme? How Do I Apply For A Car?

The Motability scheme allows disabled people to lease a new car by exchanging their mobility allowance from the government. Insurance, breakdown cover and servicing is all included in the Motability scheme, you just need to add fuel.

Who can claim Motability?

This scheme is hugely popular, if you receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA), the Enhanced Rate of Mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP), the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to get a brand new car on the Motability scheme.

What is Motability?

Get a brand new car every three years with insurance, breakdown cover and servicing costs included, all you need to do is add fuel. Motability is a not for profit organisation who operate the scheme. If you are unable to drive, you can apply for a brand new car on the scheme by putting forward two people who you would like to act as your driver i.e a family member, carer or friend. 

You simply turn part, or all, of your allowance into the car of your choice whether that be a compact city car, a estate car, a SUV or even a 7 seater family car. There are no credit checks, no waiting lists and no assessment is needed, it's very easy to get a car on the Motability scheme if you meet all their requirements.

What cars qualify for Motability?

Over 2,000 cars are available on the Motability scheme from the most popular manufacturers. The entire SKODA range is available apart from the new SKODA Kodiaq which may be on the scheme in the future.

What to consider when choosing a car?

You will need to have 12 months remaining on your Mobility allowance when you place the application at any car dealership.

There are three pricing options, the most popular option is paying a Advance Payment (AP).

1: Around 150 cars cost less than your Mobility allowance, these cars can be had for a fixed weekly amount, the remaining balance, will be paid directly to you by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or Veterans UK.

2: Want more choice? You can choose from around 400 cars if you decide to exchange all of your weekly Mobility allowance for a brand new car.

3: This is the most popular option, to get access to a much wider choice of cars you can pay a one-off upfront Advance Payment (AP). The Advance Payment is affordable and can goes up from £100.

How do I get a car on the Motability scheme?

Once you are sure you meet all the requirements to qualify for a brand new car on the Motability scheme, you need to decide which model you're after. Once you have decided on your car, simply visit our dealership and bring the following items with you:
  • Certificate of entitlement for your award from either DWP or Veterans UK (the award letter stating which allowance you have been awarded and the duration.
  • Proof of address i.e a recent bank statement of utility bill.
  • Driving license for anyone wishing to drive and any details of any previous accidents or driving convictions if applicable.
Take a test drive if you wish and purchase the car as you would a normal car, just let the sales executive know you are on the Motability scheme.
